CHROMA Passage
Grand Rapids Art Museum
Grand Rapids, MI
CHROMA Passage is an homage to the humble power of water and the versatility of Felt.
This site-specific installation transformed a 50 ft long (15m) glass passageway – off the main lobby – into an immersive experience of walking through the chroma. The nurturing, protecting quality of wool, interacted with water and light to offer an antidote to the unnatural spaces where we spend so much time.
After visiting Grand Rapids, with its historic and intimate connections to the Grand River and Great Lakes, I knew this would be the perfect place to honor water’s integral role in our lives and my work. The GRAM’s combination of integrated water features, the way the light is handled in the museum, as well as the passageway’s connection to the outdoors, inspired the combinations of texture, color and light in CHROMA Passage.
My installations are designed to be accessible to everyone, and to ensure that visitors have safe ways to touch and experience the unfelted fibers. This tactile component builds appreciation and understanding while fostering respect for the art.
During the 3 month exhibition, more than 200,000 people visited the museum, and experienced the transformation of color and luminosity throughout the day and night.
